Legend has it that Blessed Francis Venimbeni had the special power to release souls from Purgatory simply by celebrating Mass, and Giuseppe Cades captures this miraculous moment perfectly. While the priest stands solemnly at the altar and a devotee kneels in prayer, a chaotic swarm of angels swoops in from the left to pull suffering souls out of the fiery depths below. This Neoclassical drawing uses fluid, energetic lines to contrast the calm ritual of the church with the urgent, supernatural rescue happening just inches away.
