Giuseppe Passeri’s lively Baroque sketch captures a dramatic farewell scene with energetic, almost scribbly lines that feel incredibly modern. On the left, a helmeted figure gestures wildly toward a ship sailing into the distance, while a sturdy fortification looms on the rocky shore to the right. The loose, rapid strokes and touches of reddish wash in the clouds suggest this was a quick study, giving us a rare peek into the artist's creative process as he worked out the composition for a larger, more finished masterpiece.
