Design for an Alcove
ca. 1740[-]60
Giuseppe Valeriani was a master of theatrical illusion, and this architectural drawing proves it. Created around 1750, this 'alcove' looks less like a cozy reading nook and more like a grand stage set for a Baroque opera. Towering columns frame a deep, shadowy recess, inviting you to imagine a throne sitting there. The top is crowned with an outrageously ornate canopy of pink drapery, flanked by classical busts and topped with a giant pinecone—a nod to ancient Roman grandeur. It captures the flamboyant spirit of the late Baroque period, where every interior was a chance for dramatic flair.
