Girl with Burning Candle
ca 1699-1706
Godfried Schalcken was practically the master of candlelight during the Dutch Golden Age, and this piece shows exactly why. The young girl holds a single flame that casts a warm, dramatic glow across her face, perfectly highlighting the intricate lace of her towering headdress against the pitch-black background. It's a classic Baroque trick called chiaroscuro, using deep, mysterious shadows to make the light pop. Schalcken was so obsessed with capturing this effect that he reportedly painted by candlelight himself, sometimes even holding the candle in his mouth to get the perfect angle!
