Showman with Dancing Bear and Monkey
Swiss artist Gottfried Mind captures a traveling troupe of street performers on the move in this charming illustration. A large brown bear, muzzled and chained, plods along with a tiny monkey perched on its back like a little jockey. The three handlers, dressed in rustic coats and hats, guide their unusual menagerie with long poles and sticks, likely heading to the next village square to entertain crowds. Mind, often called the 'Raphael of Cats' for his animal drawings, brings a lively, almost storybook quality to this snapshot of old European street life.
