American Gothic
1930
Grant Wood painted this stern-faced duo in 1930, using his own dentist and his sister as models for the farmer and his daughter. The pitchfork-wielding man and the woman in the colonial apron stand before a real 'Carpenter Gothic' house in Iowa, creating a symbol of rural American resilience during the Great Depression. Though often interpreted as a satire of country folk, Wood insisted it was a tribute to their hardworking spirit. It now resides in the Art Institute of Chicago, forever immortalizing that serious Midwestern stare.
