沉睡的恩底彌翁
1635-50
Under a slender crescent moon, a young shepherd lies in a deep, peaceful slumber, his muscular form rendered with loose, energetic strokes. This is Endymion, a figure from Greek mythology so breathtakingly handsome that the moon goddess Selene fell madly in love with him. To keep him forever young for her nightly visits, she convinced Zeus to place him in an eternal sleep. Guercino, a master of the Baroque era, captures this mythological nap time with incredible fluidity, using simple brown washes to suggest soft drapery and a rugged landscape without overworking the page.
