Lucretia

Lucretia by Guido Reni, 1640 - 1642

Guido Reni captures the tragic Roman noblewoman Lucretia in her final, heartbreaking moments. Instead of the virtuous wife spinning wool she’s often depicted as, here she looks upward with a gaze of pure despair, her drapery slipping to reveal her vulnerability. She clutches a thin dagger, poised to take her own life to preserve her honor after a brutal assault—a sacrifice that famously sparked the rebellion ending the Roman monarchy and birthing the Republic. Reni painted this late in his life, and you can see his style becoming looser and more ethereal, focusing on raw emotion over perfect detail.
