Towering peaks of ink seem to rise straight out of the silk in this majestic landscape by Northern Song master Guo Xi. Notice the jagged, cloud-like mountains and the spindly 'crab-claw' trees at the bottom—these are his absolute signature moves! He believed a great landscape should make the viewer feel like they are actually hiking through the scene, wandering the paths and listening to the waterfalls. It's a perfect example of how Chinese artists captured the 'spirit' of nature rather than just a photograph of it.
