Three Old Willows near Langenpreising
ca 1884
Look at these gnarly old willows! Gustav Kampmann captured their twisted, ancient trunks in this sketch from August 1884, a date you can actually spot scribbled in the bottom left corner. The trees are so old and heavy they need wooden crutches—those makeshift poles and fences propping them up—to keep from toppling over into the flat, hazy landscape behind them. It feels like a quick, on-the-spot study, full of scratchy, energetic lines that make the rough bark feel almost touchable.
