Flowering Poppy Field by Gustav Klimt, 1907

Gustav Klimt traded his famous gold leaf for a riotous explosion of red poppies and wildflowers in this vibrant 1907 landscape. Painted during his summer retreats at Lake Attersee, the Austrian master used a square canvas and a cardboard viewfinder to crop nature into a flat, decorative tapestry of color. The dizzying, pointillist-style brushstrokes completely eliminate the horizon line, pulling the viewer right into the buzzing, sun-drenched meadow. It’s a rare glimpse into Klimt's private obsession with nature, far away from the glamorous Viennese society portraits that made him famous.
