Pallas Athena

Gustav Klimt

Pallas Athena by Gustav Klimt, 1898

Gustav Klimt’s fierce 1898 depiction of the Greek goddess of wisdom and war stares you down with an unblinking, almost eerie gaze from beneath her heavy golden helmet. Instead of a pristine classical statue, she wears shimmering, scale-like armor and sports a grotesque, tongue-wagging Medusa head right on her chest. In her hand, she casually dangles a tiny nude figure representing Victory, a bold move that shocked Vienna's conservative art critics at the time. This piece perfectly captures Klimt's rebellious shift away from traditional academic painting toward the glittering, symbolic style that would soon make him famous.
