Female Head
As a leader of the Symbolist movement, Gustav Klimt often explored intense human emotions, and this raw sketch is a perfect example. The woman throws her head back with eyes closed and mouth open, her arms raised in a gesture that feels like ecstatic release or a deep, surrendering stretch. Rendered in loose pencil lines and scratchy blue and orange crayon on brown paper, it’s a far cry from his stiff, gold-leafed portraits. This raw energy is typical of his private drawings; Klimt produced thousands of these expressive, often erotic sketches, keeping most of them hidden away in his studio rather than showing them to the public.
