Without Heavy Industry We Cannot Build Any Industry
1930
Gustav Klutsis was a pioneer of photomontage long before Photoshop, and this 1930 poster screams Soviet Constructivism with its bold red background and massive, looming smokestacks. The Russian text at the top translates to the title, serving as a visual pep talk for Stalin's First Five-Year Plan. Klutsis mashed up black-and-white photos of gritty factory workers with giant geometric shapes and floating statistics to make the message feel urgent and modern. It’s essentially a visual shout that 'heavy industry' is the only way forward, though sadly, Klutsis himself would later fall victim to the very regime he championed during the Great Purge.
