Stillende Mutter
1923
Slovak artist Gustáv Mallý skips polished perfection for raw emotion in this 1923 expressionist piece, using bold, scratchy brushstrokes to capture a mother breastfeeding her baby. The mother’s gentle, rosy-cheeked smile and the way she cradles the child feel incredibly intimate and real, almost like a snapshot of a quiet afternoon. By focusing on the warm connection between the figures rather than strict realism, Mallý turns a simple everyday moment into a powerful symbol of care and love.
