Paesaggio con una casa
Gustav Wentzel, a key figure in Norwegian realism, captures a serene rural moment in this charming octagonal sketch. Notice how the long, dramatic shadows stretch from the rustic split-rail fence across the field, hinting at the low angle of a late afternoon sun. A cozy house peeks out from the dense trees on the right, nestled safely against a backdrop of rolling blue mountains. The vast, washed-out sky dominates the composition, creating a sense of immense, peaceful isolation that defines the Scandinavian landscape tradition.
