Hunter on Horseback
ca. 1864
Gustave Courbet, a passionate hunter himself, used his love for the outdoors to fuel the Realism movement, believing art should show life as it actually is—cold and unglamorous. In this moody scene, a figure bundled in a top hat and red scarf trudges through a snowy wasteland on a dark horse that looks just as tired as the rider. Instead of a heroic charge, we get a quiet, freezing trudge, capturing the raw atmosphere of a winter day with thick brushstrokes that make you almost feel the chill.
