Standing Female Nude

Standing Female Nude by Gustave Courbet, 1849

Courbet, the bad boy of the Realism movement, sketched this sturdy, unidealized nude in 1849, completely ignoring the academic rule that women must look like polished goddesses. The handwritten note at the bottom is pure gold: he tells a friend, 'Here is one we will send to Sainte-Beuve if he bothers us!' essentially threatening to annoy the famous critic with this raw, earthy drawing. The little signpost labeled 'Les Debout' (The Standing Ones) gives it a quirky, catalog-like feel. It’s a perfect snapshot of Courbet’s rebellious spirit—he wanted to paint real people, flaws and all, right down to the toes.
