Poet and Satyrs
C. 1890-1895
Gustave Moreau, the high priest of French Symbolism, treated his art like jewel boxes filled with mythological secrets. Here, a haloed poet radiates divine calm while clutching a lyre so ornate it looks like a golden skyscraper, causing wild satyrs to look on with total awe. It represents the power of art to tame raw nature, a favorite theme for the artist. Moreau was a bit of a recluse who kept most of his work hidden in his Paris home, which is now a museum dedicated to his glittering, dreamlike visions.
