Saint Sebastian And The Angel
C. 1876
Gustave Moreau transforms the traditional martyrdom of Saint Sebastian into a dreamlike vision of mystical union, a hallmark of the Symbolist movement. Instead of focusing on the physical pain of the arrows piercing his flesh, the artist centers the scene on a giant, fiery-winged angel embracing the weary saint, while a bleeding cross radiates light from above. It feels less like a historical record and more like a fever dream of spiritual devotion. Moreau, who later taught Matisse, kept this intense vision in his Parisian home, which is now a museum dedicated to his bizarre and beautiful imagination.
