Salome At The Prison
Gustave Moreau brings the biblical femme fatale to life in this moody Symbolist masterpiece, depicting Salome waiting outside the prison of John the Baptist. Dressed in heavy, jewel-encrusted robes that look like they weigh a ton, she stands pensively in a towering, shadowy corridor while a giant key hangs ominously nearby. In the background, you can just make out the kneeling figure of the prophet whose head she's about to demand. Moreau was absolutely obsessed with this dangerous woman, painting her multiple times as a mysterious, almost supernatural figure rather than just a historical character.
