L'apparizione

L'apparizione by Gustave Moreau, 1876-1877

Salome, the biblical princess, stands in a jewel-encrusted harem, pointing an accusing finger at the severed head of John the Baptist. The head floats in mid-air, surrounded by a blinding, supernatural halo of light, while blood drips down in a long, crimson streak. Moreau, a master of Symbolism, transforms a gruesome biblical tale into a dreamlike vision of obsession and divine punishment. The intricate, almost hallucinatory architecture and the glowing aura make this one of the most haunting images of the 19th century.
