Autoritratto
probably 1907-1909
Gwen John, often overshadowed by her flamboyant brother Augustus, created this intimate self-portrait during her early years in Paris around 1907. Though associated with Post-Impressionism, her style here is much quieter; notice the heavy, dark shading on the right side of her face, which gives her a mysterious look that contrasts with the delicate, scribbly lines of her hat. She was a master of quiet intensity and lived a very reclusive life, so this sketch feels like a private glimpse into her world, showing a woman who preferred deep observation over the spotlight.
