Eve by Hans Baldung

Hans Baldung Grien, a rebellious star pupil of Albrecht Dürer, gave us this striking Northern Renaissance take on the biblical Eve. Unlike the modest, shy figures often seen in religious art of the time, Baldung’s Eve stands boldly against a pitch-black void, her flowing hair cascading like a golden waterfall. She casually holds the infamous forbidden fruit—actually two apples!—using one leafy branch to playfully cover her modesty while clutching the other. Baldung was famously obsessed with the female form and the themes of temptation, making this a perfect example of his provocative style that pushed the boundaries of 16th-century religious art.
