The Abbot
c. 1526
Hans Holbein the Younger created this striking woodcut as part of his famous 'Dance of Death' series, a grim reminder that death comes for everyone, regardless of status. Here, a skeletal figure of Death aggressively drags away a wealthy Abbot, who clutches his religious staff and book in a futile attempt to maintain his dignity. Notice the hourglass hanging in the tree above? It's a classic memento mori symbol, ticking away the Abbot's final moments. Holbein used these vivid scenes to critique the corruption of the Church during the Reformation, showing that even the most powerful clergy couldn't buy their way out of the grave.
