The Judge
c. 1526
Hans Holbein the Younger didn't hold back in his famous 'Dance of Death' series, and this woodcut is a perfect example of his sharp social commentary. Here, a wealthy judge sits on his throne, seemingly about to accept a bag of coins from a man on the right, completely oblivious to the skeleton looming right over his shoulder. An hourglass lies on the ground, ticking away the judge's final moments. It's a grim reminder that death doesn't care about your wealth or power—in fact, Death seems to be whispering in the judge's ear, perhaps urging him toward his final, corrupt act before the end.
