The Three Witches by Henry Fuseli, 1786

Step into the gloomy world of Shakespeare's Macbeth, where Henry Fuseli brings the three weird sisters to life with terrifying flair. Look at those hands—Fuseli gave them long, skeletal claws that seem to reach right out of the canvas to curse you. This piece was part of a massive project to illustrate all of Shakespeare's plays, and Fuseli's obsession with the supernatural made him the perfect guy for the job. It's dark, it's dramatic, and it basically invented the goth aesthetic a century before goth was cool.
