Der Geizige by Hans Holbein The Younger, c. 1526

Hans Holbein the Younger masterfully captures a terrifying moment in this woodcut where Death comes calling for a wealthy man. The text at the top, 'Der Rych man' (The Rich Man), sets the scene: a miser is caught counting his coins when a grinning skeleton reaches across the table to claim the treasure. Surrounded by chests and bags of gold, the man throws his hands up in shock, realizing too late that his wealth can't buy him more time. This piece belongs to Holbein's famous 'Dance of Death' series, a popular Northern Renaissance theme reminding viewers that the Grim Reaper doesn't care about your bank account.
