Portrait of an unknown Man by Hans Memling, circa 1490

Hans Memling, a master of the Northern Renaissance, created portraits so lifelike they feel like 15th-century photographs. In this work from around 1490, an unidentified man gazes out with quiet intensity, his hands clasped elegantly with a gold ring catching the light against his rich fur collar. Memling's incredible attention to texture makes you want to reach out and touch the soft fabric and smooth skin, all set against a deep, dramatic black background. This style of intimate, half-length portrait became hugely influential, setting the standard for how wealthy merchants and nobles wanted to be remembered.
