Woman Combing Her Hair by Hashiguchi Goyō, 1920

Hashiguchi Goyō, a leading figure in the Shin-hanga (new print) movement, created this masterpiece in 1920, just a year before his tragic early death at age 40. The woman, wearing a vibrant blue kimono with a white floral pattern, is deeply focused on combing her impossibly long, lustrous black hair. Unlike the stylized beauties of older ukiyo-e prints, Goyō aimed for a realistic, almost photographic quality, paying meticulous attention to the texture of the hair and the softness of the skin. This piece is a perfect example of how early 20th-century artists revived traditional woodblock techniques to capture modern Japanese elegance.
