Scena di pattinaggio sul ghiaccio by Hendrick Avercamp

Hendrick Avercamp, affectionately known as 'The Mute of Kampen,' captured the sheer joy of a Dutch winter during the era's notorious Little Ice Age. Look closely at the vast frozen river and you'll spot dozens of figures bundled in 17th-century fashion, ice skating, playing an early version of hockey called kolf, and sliding on sleds past trapped boats. Despite being deaf and mute, Avercamp became the first Dutch landscape painter of the 17th century to specialize in these bustling, cheerful winter scenes, brilliantly turning a freezing natural disaster into a massive, lively community party.
