암피트리테
late 1580s
Step aside, Poseidon—Amphitrite is taking charge of the seas in this dramatic Mannerist print! Hendrick Goltzius, a Dutch virtuoso of the late 1580s, created this scene where the sea goddess stands confidently atop churning waves, holding reins to tame sea monsters like a charioteer. The elongated limbs and swirling drapery are classic Mannerist traits, designed to show off the artist's technical skill rather than strict realism. Goltzius was so famous for his prints that he became one of the first international art celebrities, with collectors traveling across Europe just to own his work.
