The Apostle Peter
1585
Hendrick Goltzius, a Dutch master of Mannerism, brings his engraver's precision to this intense study of Saint Peter. The old apostle's face is a map of wrinkles and devotion, rendered with incredibly fine hatching that makes the skin and curly beard look almost tactile. You can see the artist's mind at work in the loose, scratchy red lines sketching out the robes and the faint halo, contrasting with the finished, upward-looking gaze that suggests a moment of divine inspiration.
