Ercole e Caco

Hendrick Goltzius

1588

Ercole e Caco by Hendrick Goltzius, 1588

Hendrick Goltzius captures the moment right after a brutal brawl in this muscular masterpiece from 1588. Hercules stands triumphantly, casually resting his massive club on his shoulder like a baseball bat, while the defeated thief Cacus lies crumpled at his feet. The scene references the myth where Hercules was returning with stolen cattle, only to have some snatched by the fire-breathing giant Cacus—hence the cows grazing peacefully in the background. Notice the incredibly detailed, almost sculptural muscles on Hercules, a hallmark of the Mannerist style that loved exaggerating the human form for dramatic effect.
