Hendrick Goltzius creates a chaotic night ride in this Mannerist masterpiece, featuring the goddess Nox steering a chariot pulled by a team of bats through the clouds. She brandishes a smoking torch, accompanied by an owl at her feet and a rooster perched high above—perhaps a warning that morning is coming. A bearded figure dozes in the back of the cart as they fly past mysterious celestial symbols. Goltzius was a virtuoso of line work, using intricate hatching to give these mythical figures incredible muscular definition and movement.
