聖アンドレ
c. 1578
Hendrick Goltzius, a teenage prodigy of the engraving world, turns the martyrdom of Saint Andrew into a high-octane action scene. On the right, a beefy Andrew carries his signature X-shaped cross (the Saltire), while to the left, soldiers are already busy tying a figure to another cross in a chaotic struggle. Created around 1578, this piece showcases Goltzius's early Mannerist style, where muscles are exaggerated and lines swell with dramatic tension. The Latin text at the bottom poetically explains that Andrew traded his fishing nets for this fate, stretching his arms to the cross to reach the heavens.
