Vênus e Marte surpreendidos por Vulcano
1585
In this dramatic 1585 scene, Hendrick Goltzius captures the ultimate mythological awkward moment: Vulcan bursting in on his wife Venus and her lover Mars. The composition splits into two worlds—above, a chaotic cloud of gods including Mercury and Neptune peer down with tridents and staffs in hand, while below, the caught-in-the-act lovers recoil in shock as Vulcan stands ready with his net. Goltzius’s signature Mannerist style is on full display, featuring elongated, muscular figures twisting in complex poses that make the scene feel incredibly tense. It’s a masterclass in visual storytelling, proving that even the gods aren't safe from a messy domestic dispute.
