Ambassadeurs. Aristide Bruant in His Cabaret by Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec, 1892

Meet Aristide Bruant, the ultimate bad boy of 1890s Parisian nightlife, captured here by his biggest fan, Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec. Dressed in his signature black cape, wide-brimmed hat, and blood-red scarf, Bruant looks ready to start a fight or sing a song—probably both. This poster advertised his cabaret, Les Ambassadeurs, where he famously insulted his wealthy audience while singing about the poor. Notice the silhouette in the top right? That's likely Bruant tipping his hat in a mock salute, a gesture he was famous for.
