Cavallo
1879-1881
Long before he captured the vibrant nightlife of Paris as a Post-Impressionist master, a teenage Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec was confined to his room due to a genetic bone disorder. During this isolation, he obsessively drew animals, which became his main companions. This sketch, 'Cheval,' features a horse with a heavy, drooping head and spindly legs, rendered in quick, nervous lines that show a young artist finding his footing. It’s a poignant look at his early years, practicing his craft on the creatures he loved most before he ever stepped foot in a cabaret.
