On the River
c. 1900
Henri-Edmond Cross, usually the king of tiny colorful dots, takes a wild detour here with broad, sweeping brushstrokes to capture a candid evening cruise around 1900. A bearded man in a top hat leans in to chat with a woman wearing a gigantic, fluffy white hat and a pink dress, while the rest of the party stares dreamily at the golden sunset over the river. It’s a rare, spontaneous glimpse into the artist's process, proving that even the most meticulous Post-Impressionists knew how to let their hair down and just paint the moment.
