Salome
1870
Henri Regnault painted this striking version of Salome in Rome in 1870, just months before his tragic death in the Franco-Prussian War at age 26. Instead of a gruesome display, she looks almost casual, resting the platter with John the Baptist's head on her lap like a serving tray after a long dinner. The golden background and shimmering fabrics scream luxury, contrasting sharply with the dark subject matter of a beheading. You can practically feel the heavy silk of her dress and the rough animal skin rug beneath her bare feet, showcasing the incredible technical skill of the Academic movement.
