Fight between a Tiger and a Buffalo
1908
Rousseau never actually set foot in a jungle—he created these lush, exotic scenes by studying plants at Paris's botanical gardens and flipping through illustrated books. The tiger's wide-eyed ferocity as it pounces on the buffalo is rendered with his signature naive precision, where every leaf and fruit is painted with almost childlike meticulousness. Critics mocked his work during his lifetime, calling it amateurish, but Picasso and other avant-garde artists championed him, and today his jungle paintings are celebrated as masterpieces of outsider art.
