The Sleeping Gypsy

The Sleeping Gypsy by Henri Rousseau, 1897

Under a glowing full moon, a lion curiously sniffs a sleeping figure draped in vibrant, multi-colored stripes across a barren desert landscape. Henri Rousseau, a self-taught painter who never actually left France, created this dreamlike scene using his imagination rather than real-world travel. He famously offered this masterpiece to his hometown mayor for a measly few francs, who politely declined—little did they know it would eventually become one of the most beloved icons of modern art, now resting in New York's MoMA.
