Macbeth consulting the vision of the armed head by Henry Fuseli, 1793

Henry Fuseli brings Shakespeare's darkest moments to life here, showing a brooding Macbeth surrounded by three ghastly witches stirring a cauldron in the dark. The muscular hero looks more anxious than brave as he consults a floating armored head—a grim prophecy of his doom. Fuseli, a Swiss-born artist who practically worshipped Shakespeare, was a master of the 'sublime' and the supernatural, often painting nightmares. This piece was part of the famous Boydell Shakespeare Gallery project, which helped launch the Romantic obsession with gothic horror and psychological drama.
