The Wreck
Henry Ossawa Tanner, the first African American artist to gain international acclaim, paints a battered, dark-hulled boat drifting on a shimmering sea. The loose, choppy brushstrokes give the water a restless energy, contrasting with the heavy, silent presence of the wreck. Tanner moved to Paris to escape American racial prejudice, and while famous for his religious scenes, he had a deep love for seascapes. This moody piece shows his ability to capture atmosphere and light, turning a simple abandoned vessel into a poignant study of decay and the ocean's power.
