Snow Clearing over Nine Peaks, Hanging Scroll, on Paper 117x55.5cm
Huang Gongwang, one of the Four Masters of the Yuan Dynasty, painted this majestic winter landscape in 1349 when he was a sprightly 80 years old! The towering, snow-covered peaks seem to pierce the sky, rendered in his signature 'hemp-fiber' strokes that give the rocks a soft, almost fuzzy texture against the stark white snow. He created this masterpiece for a friend named Zhenju, capturing the serene, freezing beauty of the Nine Peaks in Jiangnan. It's a stunning example of literati painting, where the artist's inner spirit and calligraphic brushwork matter far more than realistic detail.
