Portrait of King Philip V of Spain
Check out that magnificent wig! Hyacinthe Rigaud, the artist who basically invented the 'power pose' for French royalty with his famous portrait of Louis XIV, painted the Sun King's grandson Philip V of Spain looking every bit the monarch. Decked out in gleaming armor and a luxurious ermine cloak, Philip stares off with a calm confidence, but that massive, cloud-like periwig is the real star of the show. It’s a perfect example of Baroque power dressing, where looking important was just as crucial as actually being important. Fun fact: Philip was the first Bourbon king of Spain, bringing this very French style across the Pyrenees!
