The Archangel Michael Piercing the Dragon by Martin Schongauer, c. 1475

Martin Schongauer, a master of the Northern Renaissance, created this incredibly detailed engraving around 1475. You can see the Archangel Michael looking almost serene as he casually spears a terrifying, multi-headed dragon beneath his feet. The intricate line work captures every fold of his heavy robes and the grotesque, writhing limbs of the monster. Schongauer was so influential that a young Michelangelo actually copied his prints to learn how to draw, proving that even the greatest masters started by studying the best engravings of their time.
