Frühlingslandschaft
1700s
Imagine hiking through a dreamy, swirling mountain range where the rocks look like soft, rolled-up clouds. That's the vibe Ike Taiga gives us here. Nestled among the towering peaks and gnarly pine trees is a tiny, peaceful retreat, while two travelers make their way up the path below—one riding a horse, the other trailing behind. Taiga was a master of the Japanese literati style (Nanga), which was all about expressing personal feeling rather than strict realism. He often painted scenes like this to capture the spirit of a scholarly escape into nature, far from the busy cities of Edo-period Japan.
