Swallow and Camellia
ca. 1900
Against a dramatic, void-like black background, a sleek swallow dives nose-first toward a lush, pink camellia blossom. Itō Jakuchū was legendary for his obsessive attention to detail—he once reportedly stared at a rooster for hours to get it right—and that intensity shines through in the delicate white speckles on the leaves. While Jakuchū was an 18th-century painter, this woodblock print interpretation from around 1900 captures his spirit perfectly, using bold negative space to turn a simple nature scene into a striking, almost modern graphic statement.
